April 7th marks the founding day of Baku Boulevard

The foundation of Baku Boulevard was laid 116 years ago, on April 7, 1909. Its creation was directly linked to the development of the coastal area. Although preliminary construction work in the zone began in the second half of the 19th century, it was in 1909 that the Baku City Duma officially discussed and approved plans for the Seaside Boulevard.

Originally, the boulevard stretched from what is now Azneft Square to the State Puppet Theater. Over time, its territory gradually expanded. The 1960s and 1970s witnessed rapid development of the boulevard, while the era of independence ushered in an entirely new phase of growth.

A landmark decision came on December 29, 1998, when national leader Heydar Aliyev granted the boulevard the status of a "National Park." This marked a new era in its management, preservation, and development. Over the past 20 years, under the special attention of President Ilham Aliyev, the Seaside National Park has expanded both eastward and westward. Major additions include the New Boulevard (2012), White City Boulevard (2015), and Bayil Boulevard.

Today, the Seaside National Park spans 215.164 hectares with a length of 16.7 kilometers. Preserving its historical and aesthetic character remains a top priority, exemplified by the 2018 restoration of the iconic "Swan Fountains" complex at the initiative of First Vice-President Mehriban Aliyeva.

In recognition of its uniqueness, ecological and social significance, and exceptional conservation standards, the Seaside National Park was honored with the 2024 World Urban Parks Award — affirming its status as one of the world’s leading public spaces.
